Despite the snow outside and the freezing temperatures, Nicky & Toby’s wedding looks like it was photographed in the middle of Summer rather than in February. From the moment I arrived at Greyfraiars, I knew it was going to be a great wedding. Nicky and her bridesmaids were relaxing and enjoying getting ready. The whole building rang out to sports programme theme tues that Nicky had organised for Toby’s arrival (think Ski Sunday, etc). The wedding ceremony was full of emotion with great readings and a mix of smiles and tears. The rest of the wedding day flew by. The staff at Greyfriars as well as the from Caper and Berry couldn’t have been better. Toby & Nicky always said they they couldn’t wait until the music on their wedding night and they weren’t wrong. The dance floor was fit to burst all night with Toby showing his trademark spin. Nickys brother was the DJ for most of the night before it was highjacked for a while as you can see below. Wiltshire Magazine Article on Wedding Photography

Just after I won the ‘Wedding Photographer of the Year’ award for SW England, I was approached by The Wiltshire Magazine to write an article about my career to date, how I started and how I work now. As a member of the WPJA (Wedding Photojournalist Association), I am invited to enter their quarterly competition. The images that they look for are those natural and spontaneous moments that happen at a wedding. The leve l of competition is huge and comes from all over the word. To be placed in the top twenty images for any given category is considered by them to be award winning based on the huge volume of entrants. Anyone that knows me knows that I love a challenge. Well Sam and Neil gave me one of the biggest of my photographic career. A January wedding at 4.30 in a church lit purely by candles! It looked stunning and I only hope I did it justice! I can’t believe they organised the whole wedding in just 6 weeks! Sam even hand made all the roses on the cake. I only met them last week and couldn’t wait to capture their day. They are such a down to earth couple that deserved and got their own unique wedding day. Here are just a few images from their day. Weddings in Central London always have a certain feel to them. Add in a winter wedding at 4pm and you are guaranteed those lovely warm indoor tones for the photographs. I had not photographed at 30 Pavilion Road before, its a great small wedding venue at the back of Harrods. Paul looked after the couple very well and the champagne flowed all day. For my first blog of 2012, I thought I would share a selection of images from last year. It was such a good year with so many great weddings. The majority of which are on previous posts on this blog. I have selected a range of wedding pictures that show my style and approach as well as from across different parts of the day. I had so many to choose from, I could have produced a few slideshows. Here it is, my last wedding of 2011. And what a wedding it was! You know when a couple is meant for each other when they buy each other similar presents. When those presents are Classic Foo Fighters albums on Vinyl, you know they think alike! Again I was blessed with great weather for a winter wedding, I have no idea how as it was super stormy the day before! The atmosphere throughout the day was fantastic. I have so many pictures of Becky and James laughing. Everyone was relaxed and the speeches went down very well. During dinner, the hotel welcomed the Leeds United Squad ahead of their match next day. It would have been rude not to get a picture of Becky and the boys. I left my last wedding of the year with one of my favourite things. A bag of Jelly sweets! We couldn’t have been luckier with the weather, it was a sunny crisp morning for this winter wedding in London. Getting ready in the morning was the usual mix of excitment, some nerves and time management. Gill had a beautiful and unusual wedding dress that had a detachable outer skirt. The ceremony was in St Lawrence Jewry by Guildhall. The church is important to Jamies family with one of the stained glass windows dedicated to his relative who was the Sherrif of the City of London in 1940. Very unusually, there was plenty of time between the service and the wedding breakfast. This made for a great drinks reception at Haberdashers Hall. After speeches, we captured a few extra couple images around the Hall.

16 top tips for your wedding day!

There are so many articles out there about your wedding and lots of it is very useful. As a wedding photographer, I always try and help my couples as much as I can and give them advice throughout the day.

My advice differs slightly from lots of lists out there and comes from being with brides and grooms on their day and seeing what is genuinely helpful for them. Feel free to send this page to Brides and Grooms. There are Facebook and Twitter ‘like’ buttons at the bottom of the article.

Here are some top tips that should really help you.

1 – On the morning of your wedding, you can do no more! Everything that you have worked on has been done and its time to relax and take the day in. Things will go wrong but as long as you are there, your partner is there and you have someone to marry you, then everything else is a bonus.

2 – Don’t let others stress you out. I have seen lots of well wishing friends and family add to the stress on the morning without knowing it. “Your car is here already” or similar I often hear being shouted. The car will always be early and it’s not going without you. Just remember that you have the control. Those around you will often do things that can get your adrenaline going just let it wash over you.

3 – Dry the bottom of the stems of your flowers off. They can make a lovely wet stain on your beautiful dress if still wet.

4 – Take the stickers off the bottom of your shoes! Hairspray will help if they are really sticky. This is the first thing I check for when I enter a room on the morning of a wedding. Maybe task one of the bridesmaids with doing it for you.

5 – Get some food before you put the dress on. Lots of brides don’t eat the wedding breakfast as they are talking to friends and family. You will need something to keep you going.

6 – Get into your dress earlier than you think. Especially if its one that laces up the back. They are always trickier than they looked in the shop and need to be tied twice to make sure you are in properly. Plus you want a few minutes to settle into it.

7 – Take a bottle of water with you in the car. You will get a dry mouth on the way.

8 – Boys: If you are at the bar beforehand, have a short rather than a pint. You really don’t want a full bladder during the service!

9 – This is the funny one but the most useful and the one that gets the most reaction. I know it works as lots of brides have thanked me for it. If you have a long train on your dress, it can be tricky to go to the loo.

Typically, brides will have their friends lift the dress up behind them. But, the trick is…… Go forward onto the loo! Seriously, put your tummy where the systern is and straddle the seat! This means your dress goes behind you and doesn’t need to go up in the air! I know its funny but it works.

10 – Just before you get out of the car or enter into the wedding room, take 15 seconds to deep breath and take it all in. With the excitement of the day, it can flyby without noticing it

11 – If you are getting married in a Church, ask the priest or vicar if they are actually going to pronounce you ‘Man and Wife’ or similar. Some do it and some don’t. If you have grown up expecting that moment to happen and it doesn’t, it can be a bit of an anti-climax. If you know its not going to happen then you are better prepared for it. You may be able to ask then to do it even if they don’t normally.

12 – Have that first kiss. Even if it’s in a church where they don’t pronounce you “Man & Wife” still have the kiss. For many, it’s the moment you are truly married and if it doesn’t happen, it’s a shame.

13 – Book ample time between the end of service and sitting down for the wedding breakfast. Once the meal starts, the rest of the day flys by. Leaving a couple of hours to speak with friends and enjoy the atmosphere is fantastic

14 – Receiving lines can really eat into your day. Unless you really want one, think seriously about it. 100 people at 30 seconds each is nearly an hour out of your wedding day. You will rarely talk to everyone on the day anyway but going around the tables between courses will give you a much better opportunity for talking to key people.

15 – Buy some sparkly trainers (converse do a great pair) for the bride and bridesmaids. If you dance then so will everyone else. It will be a relief to change from heels (of so I am told!)

16 – Finally, of course you should book a great photographer. But more than that, book a photographer that loves shooting weddings. Not a frustrated landscape photographer that ‘has’ to shoot weddings to pay the bills. When you meet with a photographer, you want someone that is going to enjoy the day with you that will ultimately lead to better images.

I only recently met Claire and Paul to discuss their winter wedding. We got on straight away and I was delighted to photograph their wedding. I have been so lucky with good weather this year that on Sunday, I thought my luck had to run out. How wrong was I! It may not have been sunny or that warm but the fog gave such a fantastic atmosphere and backdrop to their intimate wedding. After a short ceremony, we had some time to get a selection of portraits of the two of them. I love the fact that they had their first dance in the middle of the road! Here is a small selection from their wedding.
